2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer game identity.
The president stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
This announcement echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After some time of talks, he officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to persist witnessing the progress of the game in the time to follow.
David
The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your team can secure victory? The option is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can expect additional details as production continues.
